As a partner of GSEU, the Ukrainian Association of Geologists within the framework of the tasks of Work Package 8 disseminates information regarding some published news and scientific articles in Ukraine on the main thematic areas of the project.
Signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union in 2014 binds Ukraine to implement European standards in water management, protection and pollution control. The Water Framework Directive defines fundamental provisions for achieving good water quality in EU water bodies.
The strategic environmental objective for all river basin areas is to achieve/maintain ‘good’ chemical and quantitative status of groundwater bodies. Monitoring is a tool that can be used to achieve these goals. Sites subject to state water monitoring include surface and groundwater bodies. In order to adjust national groundwater monitoring to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive, the Law of Ukraine ‘On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine on the Implementation of Integrated Approaches to Water Resources Management Based on the Basin Principle’ and the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine ‘Procedure for State Water Monitoring’ were adopted. Duties and responsibilities for monitoring are assigned to the relevant state bodies. National groundwater monitoring adjustment to the WFD requirements constitutes a crucial step to ensure effective water resources management.
