The existing EGDI system will be taken to a new level by transforming the current data infrastructure into a knowledge infrastructure. EGDI will become a fundamental element of the GSEU, supporting the delivery of knowledge to policy makers and other stakeholders.
Objectives and tasks:
One of the objectives is to maintain and operate the existing EGDI core infrastructure, consisting of the central databases, document repository, metadata system, search, upload and harvesting systems, the EGDI portal, the web GIS, etc. In parallel, new generic components will be extended and developed to meet the needs of scientific users and support all research in the areas of expertise for decision support, visualisation, Big Data approaches and the enhancement of a comprehensive Linked Data knowledge base. The IT infrastructure will be consolidated and made highly scalable. The improvement of the existing repositories, search system and semantic web technologies will facilitate the transition to a knowledge infrastructure.
The thematic tasks of EGDI will be the main link to other areas of expertise within the GSEU. Working closely with researchers, new thematic functions will be developed iteratively to facilitate the optimal use of new and expanded datasets delivered to EGDI, provide access to related knowledge, and support informed decisions on policy issues. It will collect, summarise and develop the field's requirements in terms of data (exchange) standards, harmonisation, linked data, data processing or improved visualisation. These requirements will be translated into working functionality within the EGDI core product and, where appropriate, into satellite thematic interfaces.
The EGDI hub is being developed to ensure connectivity and interoperability with a wide range of key European stakeholders, including but not limited to the EU Open Data Portal, the EU Inspire Geoportal, EOSC, RMIS, EPOS, and DestinE. This project will gather requirements in collaboration with stakeholders and work with global standardisation bodies as needed to ensure FAIR and open access to subsurface data at European level and influence at the national level where possible.
Deliverables:
- An operational EGDI knowledge infrastructure
- New products available through EGDI
- EGDI data hub feeding FAIR EGDI data into surrounding EU information infrastructures
