The UAG was created on February 23, 2000, on the initiative of a group of enthusiasts from the Ukrainian geological community. The initiative was supported by other leading Ukrainian geological enterprises and organizations. Subsequently, the Association united geologists and geophysicists of industrial enterprises, scientists and managers who worked in 46 organizations, enterprises and institutions of the Public Service of Geology and Subsoil of Ukraine, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, NJSC Nadra of Ukraine, universities and private companies.
Today, the Association has 3345 individual members.
Thus, the UAG concentrates and combines significant scientific and intellectual potential on the national scale.
Outstanding events in the geological community and modern problems of the industry and their solutions were showcased by the Association during six Conferences of Geologists of Ukraine:
- I Conference of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists (2000): The adoption of ‘Concept of Reforming the Geological Industry of Ukraine in Accordance with the Conditions of a Market Economy’
- IІ Conference of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists (2003): The preservation of geological heritage (‘Save and Multiply the Wealth of Generations of Geologists of Ukraine!’)
- ІІI Conference of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists (2005): Deepening cooperation with international organizations and increasing the role of the Association’s centers
- ІV Conference of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists (2010): Discussion of the results of the UAG’s activities over 10 years, problems of the industry, solutions and plans for the future development of the organization
- V Conference of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists (2012): The adoption of the ‘Program of Employment and Adaptation to the Market Economy of Specialists of the Geological Prospecting Industry with the Aim of Preserving the Personnel and Intellectual Potential of Ukrainian Geology’
- VI Conference of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists (2017): Initiating the platform ‘The Implementation of the Ukraine–European Union Association Agreement Standards on the Effective and Balanced Use of Natural Resources’
