Institution history

The Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation named after M.P. Semenenko of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (until 1993, the Institute of Geochemistry and Physics of Minerals (IGPM), in 2006, the Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation) was established on 09 January 1969 on the basis of the Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Petrography, Minerals and Metallogeny Sector of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR to study the composition and evolution of the lithosphere; identification of patterns of formation and localization of mineral deposits; development of geochemical, mineralogical and petrological criteria for forecasting and prospecting for deposits and ore occurrences; synthesis of minerals and the identification of new types of mineral raw materials.

On 18 February 1993, due to the strengthening of the ore-metallogenic direction, by the decree of the Presidium of NAS of Ukraine, the Institute of Geochemistry and Physics of Minerals was renamed into the Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation (IGMO).

On 07 December 2006, by the decision of the Presidium of NAS of Ukraine (Decree No. 326), the Institute was named after the founder and its first director, Academician of NAS of Ukraine M.P. Semenenko.

The Charter of the Institute was approved by Order of the Presidium of NAS of Ukraine No. 738 dated 16.11.2016.

The main areas of scientific research of the Institute in accordance with Decree of the Presidium of NAS of Ukraine No.180 dated 26.09.2012 include:

  • geochemistry of rock and ore formation processes, exploratory geochemistry and environmental geochemistry;
  • regional and genetic mineralogy, physics of minerals, nano-mineralogy;
  • petrology of endogenous processes;
  • geology, metallogeny and forecasting of mineral deposits of Ukraine.

The Institute is the only science center in the NAS system and the leading Ukrainian center for determining the age of rocks by isotopic methods and studying the isotopic composition of heavy radioactive elements. Scientific interests are focused on elucidating the patterns of the location and discovery of new deposits of ferrous, non-ferrous, noble, rare metals, radioactive elements, the potential of which is in the Precambrian of the Ukrainian Shield (USH) and its frame; introducing geochemical methods of exploration into the practice of exploration; research in the field of physics of minerals, thermobarogeochemistry, biomineralogy.

The following 13 scientific departments are working over the implementation of the tasks facing by the Institute: isotope geochemistry and mass spectrometry; radio geochronology; exploratory and environmental geochemistry; geochemistry of industrial metals and analytical chemistry; regional and genetic mineralogy; optical spectroscopy and luminescence of minerals; physics of mineral structures and biomineralogy; diamond problems; petrology; Precambrian geology and chronostratigraphy; geology and geochemistry of ore deposits, geological, geochemical and remote research methods, space ecology and space mineralogy.

The efforts of the Institute staff are mainly aimed at studying the material composition of geological formations in the series isotope - element - mineral - rock - rock kindred - ore formations. These studies are the main element in revealing the patterns of mineral distribution, in particular, in Precambrian formations. The institute has established the Center for Collective Use of Instruments "Mass spectrometric center for solid-phase, gas isotopic and trace element analysis".

The specialized scientific council of the institute accepts thesis defence for the degree of doctor and candidate of geological sciences in the fields "geochemistry", "petrology", "mineralogy, crystallography". The scientific schools that exist and are developing at the Institute contribute to solving the issues of unlocking the ore potential of the Ukrainian Shield: petrological (founded by Acad.V.I. Luchytskyi, prof.M.I.Bezborodko and Corr. Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR I.S.Usenko) isotope geochemistry and geochronology (founded by Acad.Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR M.P.Semenenko and Corr.USSR Academy of Sciences E.S.Burkser) regional, genetic mineralogy and physics of minerals (founded by Acad.USSR Academy of Sciences E.K. Lazarenko, Acad.USSR Academy of Sciences A.S. Povarenni and Corr.Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR I.V. Matiash) lithology and exploratory geochemistry (founded by Acad.Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR L.Tkachuk and Doc. Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, prof.E.I.Kukovskyi).

Since 1979, the Institute has been publishing the Mineralogical Journal, and in 2003, it resumed the publication of the collection of scientific papers "Geochemistry and Ore Formation".

The founder of the Institute and its first director was Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Mykola Panteleimonovich Semenenko, an outstanding scientist in the field of petrology, geochemistry, geochronology and ore-bearing Precambrian.

From 1997 to 2008, the Institute was headed by Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine M.P. Shcherbak - a scientist in the field of petrology, mineralogy and isotope geochronology of Precambrian formations, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, twice laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology.

Since 2008, the Director of the Institute is Academician of NAS of Ukraine O.M. Ponomarenko, an expert in the field of isotope geochronology and isotope geochemistry.
