The event was conducted in two rounds: remote and face-to-face. The purpose of the first round (remote), which took place on 01-31 March 2013, was to test the geological knowledge of participants - pupils of 7-11grades and to select participants of the second round (face-to-face). Responses were sent to the Organizing Committee email address. Three variants of tests were developed, which differed in the presence of mineralogical, paleontological and geophysical subjects. The questions for the remote round concerned the well-known geological information.
Young geologists from Kyiv, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Bila Tserkva, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, as well as Kyiv (Vasylkiv), Zhytomyr (Novoborova, Denyshi) and Cherkasy regions participated in the Olympiad. All participants of the first round were invited to the second round of the Olympiad.
The second round took place on 13 April 2013 at the Geological Faculty of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Participants were able to work on tasks for 2 hours, during which a round table for geography teachers and heads of geological units was held. After writing the works, the students went on an excursion to the Geological Museum of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, which is headed by Professor Viktor Nesterovskyi, Doctor of Geological Sciences. Most of the participants of the Olympiadsaw the expositions of the museum and heard the story of the exhibits for the first time, were photographed near the legendary mammoth. Then the students visited the recently opened auditorium named after Academician V.I. Vernadsky. While the school works were being inspected, A.V. Nesterovskyi and O.A. Kytschka held a master class in mineralogy in the classroom named after Professor Olherd Leonardovych Einor, where the face to face round of the Olympiad took place.
The knowledge of the participants of the Olympiad was evaluated based on the age of the students. The winners were determined in the appropriate age group by the number of points scored.
