The third symposium on Black Sea geology was held on 01-10 October 2011 at the Novotel Convention Center in the Romanian capital. The conference lasted for five days and the next five days were devoted to the field exploration in Romania.

In terms of representation and breadth of the areas under discussion, this symposium also conceded to the AAPG Black Sea-Caspian Conference, which was held in Kyiv last October with the organizational support of UAG.

Ukraine was represented by speakers and representatives from the State Enterprise “Ukrgeofizika”, the Institute of Geophysics of NASU, the Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation of NASU, the Central Scientific Research Institute of NASU the State Enterprise “Naukanaftogaz”, “SPK-Geoservice”.

The scientific program of the symposium included the following directions:

  • Tectonic evolution and geodynamics of the Circum-Black Sea region.
  • Oil and gas geology of the Black Sea region.
  • Stratigraphy, paleontology, sedimentology and paleoclimatology.
  • Black Sea basin inversion, structural styles and the role of the foundation.
  • Geophysical studies of the Black Sea.
  • Petrology, volcanology, geochemistry, geochronology, minerals.
  • Integrated coastal zone management.
  • Geology and sedimentology of anthropogenic sediments.
  • Evolution of Parathetis.
  • Ecology, paleoenvironmental changes and human impact on the environment.
  • Vulnerable and protected areas of the Black Sea region.

As can be seen from the topic, the three sections had an environmental focus due to the relevant specialization of the GeoEcoMarina Institute - one of the organizers of the symposium. Traditionally, oil and gas, tectonic and sedimentological topics were the most popular.

Forum participants had the opportunity to participate in three field geological field trips:

  • Danube Delta: Geology, Sedimentology, and Geoecology.
  • Dobrudja - the northwestern segment of the Black Sea outskirts: an overview of the geology and structure of the North Dobrudja orogen and the east of the Moesian Platform.
  • South Carpathian Late Cretaceous magmatic and metallogenic zone and alpine structures of the western part of the Southern Carpathians.
