The Congress took place on 05-10 August 2012 in Brisbane, the capital of the Australian state of Queensland. 6012 delegates from 112 countries took part in the scientific event. The scientific program included 5,181 oral and poster presentations over five days, 24 advanced training seminars and 29 field explorations of Australia and New Zealand, as well as other Pacific islands. Representatives of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists were among the national participants.

The preparatory work for the successful holding of this international summit of geologists lasted for eight years: from a successful application to the Florence Congress, consistent advertising at all geological events, a thorny path of various approvals, drafting a scientific program, publishing guides for geological excursions to financial and visa issues.

Geological congresses that take part every four years are competitions for geologists who, incidentally, coincide in time with sports competitions. The Congress features several concomitant forums, namely: II World Congress of Geological Youth (YES), International Convention of National Geological Services "Applying Earth Sciences to Respond to Modern World Challenges", Global Earth Science Initiative - "Development Roadmap for the Development of Earth Sciences as a Component of the Belmont Forum ", the presentation of the" Earth Science Priority" program - a successor to the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE).
